    Campaign for Wisconsin Libraries

    Community Service Policy

    Updated: June 7, 2006

The Kimberly-Little Chute Public Library is interested in being a participant in school assignments in which community service is asked of the students. The library considers itself a partner with the schools and wants to encourage people in the community to donate their time to making the community a better place to live.

However, the joint public library hereby establishes the following guidelines for students doing community service for school credit:

    1. Only students attending schools in the Kimberly or Little Chute School Districts (public, parochial, or home schools) may do community service at the Kimberly-Little Chute Public Library)

    2. All students doing community service for the schools must call the library in advance to see if there is work for them to do. If there isn't any work, they can't come to the library for community service that day.

    3. No more than two (2) students will be allowed to work in the library at any one time. This is to ensure that staff can take the time to show the students what needs to be done and how to do it without compromising their existing duties. It is to also ensure that there is sufficient work for students to do.

    4. No more than five (5) hours of community service will be granted to any one student toward the completion of their assignment. If the student has more hours to donate to the community, he/she will need to find another site to complete the required hours.

    5. Failure of the student to do a satisfactory job the first time will end the community service in the library for that student regardless of the number of hours considered to be the maximum in number 4 above. Failure includes, but is not limited to, having the library's staff spend a large amount of time training the student in various procedures.

This policy may be added to or modified at any time upon approval of the Kimberly-Little Chute Public Library Board.

Approved by the library board: March 21, 2002. Reviewed for currency May 2004.
