    book jacketFox Cities Reads

This year’s Fox Cities Reads is once again a collaboration between the public libraries of Appleton, Neenah, Menasha, Kimberly, Little Chute and Kaukauna, as well as UW-Fox Valley and the Appleton Area School District.

This year's author is Wisconsin-based Lesley Kagen and her New York Times best-selling novel Whistling in the Dark. We hope you enjoy this choice, which takes place in Milwaukee in the late 1950s. In this mystery story, Sally O’Malley is a feisty heroine who will tug at your heartstrings and make you laugh.

We will be hosting discussions of "Whistling in the Dark" on the following dates. Please join us and be a part of Fox Cities Reads!

    • Saturday, March 13, 9 a.m. at the Great Lakes Chocolate & Coffee Company, Kimberly

    Coming Up with Readers Groups

book jacketThe Kimberly-Little Chute Reader’s group meets the third Thursday of the month at the Kimberly Public Library. The March meeting will take place on Thursday, March 18th at 1:00 p.m. The book we will be discussing is The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards. Edwards is one of the featured authors who will be in the Fox Valley on Sunday, April 11th in conjunction with the Fox Cities Book Festival.

The Memory Keeper’s Daughter hinges on the birth of fraternal twins, a healthy boy and a girl with Down syndrome, resulting in the father's disavowal of his newborn daughter. A snowstorm immobilizes Lexington, Ky., in 1964, and when young Norah Henry goes into labor, her husband, orthopedic surgeon Dr. David Henry, must deliver their babies himself, aided only by a nurse. Seeing his daughter's handicap, he instructs the nurse, Caroline Gill, to take her to a home and later tells Norah, who was drugged during labor that their son Paul's twin died at birth. Instead of institutionalizing Phoebe, Caroline absconds with her to Pittsburgh. David's deception becomes the defining moment of the main characters' lives, and Phoebe's absence corrodes her birth family's core over the course of the next 25 years. David's undetected lie warps his marriage; he grapples with guilt; Norah mourns her lost child; and Paul not only deals with his parents' icy relationship but with his own yearnings for his sister as well. Come join us for what should be an interesting discussion.

book jacketThe Kimberly-Little Chute Evening Reader’s group meets the fourth Monday of the month at the Little Chute Public Library. The March meeting will take place on Monday, March 22 at 6:30 pm. The book we will be discussing is Whistling in the Dark by Leslie Kagen. Whistling in the Dark is this year’s community read and once again a collaboration between the public libraries of Appleton, Neenah, Menasha, Kimberly, Little Chute and Kaukauna, as well as UW-Fox Valley and the Appleton Area School District.

The loss of innocence can be as dramatic as the loss of a parent or the discovery that what's perceived to be truth can actually be a big fat lie, as shown in Kagen's compassionate debut, a coming-of-age thriller set in Milwaukee during the summer of 1959. Ten-year-old Sally O'Malley fears that a child predator that has already murdered two girls, Junie Piaskowski and Sara Heinemann, will target her or her little sister, Troo, next. Sally's mom is in the hospital, while her big sister, Nell, is distracted by love and her step dad, Hall, by the bottle, so who can save her if the killer is, as she suspects, her neighbor, David Rasmussen, a popular cop who has a photo of Junie hanging in his house? Though the mystery elements are sketchy, Kagen sharply depicts the vulnerability of children of any era. Sally, "a girl who wouldn't break a promise even if her life depended on it," makes an enchanting protagonist.

As a side note, Kagen will be at the Kimberly Library Friday, April 16th from 9:30-11:30 as part of the Fox Cities Book Festival.
